MacAvalanche!

From the snowy summit of one of Scotland’s iconic mountains to the valley floor in under 9 minutes…

That’s what 120 daredevil mountain bikers will be hoping to achieve this Saturday in the adrenalin filled MacAvalanche race.

The riders will be airlifted to the summit by helicopter before gathering together for a mass ‘Le Mans’ style start on the still snow covered slopes of Meall a Bhuiridh, home to Scotland’s oldest ski resort Glencoe Mountain, historically a winter playground for skiers and boarders but now open in summer for biking too.

The race crosses the ski tows and pistes through snow filled gullies and rocky trails before hitting the lower slopes and one of the UK’s toughest downhill mountain bike race tracks.

The first rider to make it through the finish line arch down at the bottom of the chairlift gets the glory of winning the first edition of this unique new event.

Event organizer Frazer Coupland of No Fuss Events, a company well known for running triathlons, endurance bike races and the wacky ‘Glen Nevis River Race’ (racing lilos, inflatable crocodiles and other pool toys down waterfalls and rapids!) says ‘what will the course be like? Soft snow, steep, fast, rocky, boggy, some pedalling and a bloody riot I am sure.

YouTube sensation Danny MacAskill is one of the riders lucky enough to be selected to take part, the Red Bull sponsored stunt cyclist has had well over 20 million views of his online videos displaying his phenomenal skills on a bike.

Spectators are welcome and entry is free, though for the best view of the action its worth getting a chairlift ticket up the mountain.
